You can help the baby turtles of Petrie Island by sponsoring some turtle eggs. The Friends of Petrie Island are running this sponsorship program to raise funds to support turtle conservation on Petrie Island.
Freshwater turtles face many threats, including nest predation where up to 95% of nests are predated by raccoons and other predators. To help address the high rates of nest predation at Petrie Island, a number of collaborative activities are planned.
- Doing active surveillance of common nesting areas to identify new nests of turtle eggs
- Collecting turtle eggs and storing them in incubators at the laboratory at the Ottawa Riverkeeper’s new facility, River House. It is anticipated that over 400 eggs will be protected through this initiative, with targets set to collect a minimum of 100 northern map turtle eggs and 200 snapping turtle eggs.
- Responding to visitor reports of nesting turtles to collect eggs before predation
- Sheltering of other nests with nest protectors
- Establishing demonstration nests for public awareness
- Developing educational displays and materials to complement the demonstration nest
- Hosting Turtle Day to celebrate Petrie Island’s most popular residents
- Releasing the hatchlings back to their home environment at Turtle Release Days
