Summer employment 2024

The Friends of Petrie Island is recruiting students 15 to 30 years of age for a park monitor position. The work will focus on stewardship activities at Petrie Island a conservation area and unique wetland area on the Ottawa River, in east Ottawa. Due to funding restrictions, International Students are not eligible for these positions. 

Park Monitors work primarily outdoors.
Employment will be approximately 8 weeks over July and August, with salary of $16.80/ hr. Weekends are included on a scheduled basis.


    Environmental stewardship activities including: collecting environmental data on plants and wildlife, performing research, monitoring environmental conditions and plant/animal life, remediation of environmental damage, including invasive species; interacting with public to inform about good environmental practices for the nature preserve. 

    Developing and delivering environmental education programs for adults and children. Participating in program design, preparing displays, leading nature tours. Giving nature tours; organizing activities for children; responding to queries from the public.

    Supporting the volunteer organization with activities such as communications and social media, administrative duties, assisting with picnic and barbecue permits and memberships.

    Working in a small team of summer staff, as well as a group of adult volunteers.

    Required to address public, responding to queries and providing information, as well as interacting with supervised summer students. Interaction with children is required. Use of research, editing and other common computer software and Internet. Preparation of digital and printed presentations and displays. Bilingualism is an asset.

    Location: Petrie Island, Orleans, Ontario. Accessible by public transit. Most work performed outdoors, light manual duties. Short trail hikes.
