Friends of Petrie Island has three summer jobs open in 2020 for university-level students or graduates 15 to 30 years of age. They are Park Monitors to work primarily outdoors, in an unique environmental area on the Ottawa River, in east Ottawa.
Employment usually begins in early May, ends mid-August, with salary of $14.00/hour. Weekends are included on a scheduled basis.
Overview – Engaging visitors; orienting visitors to the Island, local activities and existing regulations. Responding to public inquiries and registration activities as required. Developing and delivering environmental education programs for adults and children. Participating in program design, preparing displays, leading nature tours, organizing activities for children;
Environmental stewardship activities including research, collecting data on plants and wildlife, monitoring environmental conditions including plant/ animal life; remediation work on environmental damage, incl flooding damage and invasive species; interacting with public to inform about good environmental practices for the nature preserve; responding to queries from the public;
Working in a small team of summer staff, as well as a group of adult volunteers.
Required to address public, responding to queries and providing information, as well as interacting with supervised summer students. Interaction with children is required. Use of research, editing and other common computer software and Internet. Preparation of digital and printed presentations and displays.
Location: Petrie Island, Orleans, Ontario. Most work performed outdoors, occasional light manual duties. Short trail hikes. Note: spring flooding varies from year to year, and may impact duties and date of employment.
