Ten Years of Community Service!

In 2007, the Friends of Petrie Island are celebrating their tenth year of community service. Working under an agreement with the City of Ottawa, the group initially cleared and developed the picnic area and adjacent beach, and refurbished the city-owned cottage as a nature interpretation centre. Over the years, the Friends built a new parking lot for the picnic area, cleared and improved nature trails throughout the Petrie Islands and installed a number of platforms for viewing the wetlands, the Ottawa River and the abundant wildlife. Also provided were several signs with information on the site, its history and its environment. The Friends of Petrie Island are represented on the Petrie Island Advisory Committee struck by the City to advise on the operation and development of the island. Since 1997, the Friends have received support from a cross-section of the community, elected representatives, city staff and crews, members of concerned organizations and community groups, generous donors and many local residents - the Friends of Petrie Island are deeply grateful for their vital support.

Dix ans de service à la communauté!

Les Amis de l’île Petrie célèbrent en 2007 leur dixième année de service à la communauté. Travaillant en vertu d’une entente avec la municipalité d’Ottawa, le groupe a tout d’abord défriché et organisé le terrain de pique-nique et la petite plage qui le borde, puis réaménagé le chalet appartenant à la municipalité pour en faire un centre d’interprétation de la nature. Au fil des ans, les Amis on aménagé une aire de stationnement pour le terrain de pique-nique, développé les sentiers partout sur les îles et installé des plate-formes d’observation de la rivière des Outaouais, des marécages, et de la faune les habitant. Ils ont aussi érigé plusieurs panneaux d’information sur le site, son histoire et son environnement. Les Amis de l’île Petrie siègent au Comité consultative de l’île Petrie établi par la municipalité pour consulter sur le l’aménagement et l’administration de l’île Petrie. Chemin faisant, depuis 1997, les Amis ont bénéficié de l’appui d’une variété de gens : représentants élus, équipes et personnel de la municipalité, membres de groupes intéressés, organismes communautaires, donateurs généreux et une foule de résidents - les Amis de l’île Petrie leur sont profondément reconnaissants pour ce soutien vital.
